How to back the project financially?

While NixOS is free and open-source, there are a lot of costs coming with such a large project. Your support helps us keep it sustainable. There are two main ways to support the project:

Sponsorships

Recurring support with perks in return.

Help us keep NixOS and Nixpkgs sustainable by becoming a sponsor. Your support helps us maintain the infrastructure, improve the project, and organize events. We offer various sponsorship tiers, each with its own set of benefits.

Donations

Simple one-time or recurring payments.

Show your support by donating to the NixOS Foundation. This helps us continue to provide free, open-source software to the community. This is a regular donation with no perks in return. We accept donations either via Open Collective or via bank transfer.

Ideal for individuals and organizations who want to just say thank you and secure the projects future.

Are you a university or startup?

We are aware that many universities and startups are interested in supporting NixOS but may struggle with the finincial entrylevel. Get in touch with us to learn about our community tier which will grant you a logo on our website.

NixOS Foundation is using Open Collective to manage the finances so everyone can see where money comes from and where money goes.

With Open Collective you can make a single or recurring contribution by credit card transfer.

The NixOS Foundation

The NixOS infrastructure, development and events are funded by its users and sponsors.

Maintaining our build farm and binary cache is very expensive. We depend on your support to ensure the continuous operation and expansion of the NixOS infrastructure.

Please consider donating a small amount every month to contribute to sustainable funding. Donations are handled by a nonprofit organization, the NixOS Foundation .

Acknowledgements

The Nix package manager was developed by Eelco Dolstra as part of his PhD research in the TraCE project , funded by the Jacquard programme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and SERC. The first prototype of NixOS was developed by Armijn Hemel as his master’s thesis project. Hydra, the Nix-based continuous build system, was developed as part of the LaQuSo Buildfarm project, funded by NIRICT and LaQuSo .
